Although field-based empirical research on individuals with disability has been actively conducted in psychological rehabilitation and counseling, counseling theory specialized for disability is not well known. Theories are essential for counseling practice because they are the basis for clinical judgment and intervention, but existing counseling theories are limited in their ability to sensitively deal with disability issues. Therefore, many rehabilitation psychology researchers in Korea attempted to develop specialized case conceptualizations and interventions based on traditional counseling theories, such as psychodynamic, behaviorism, and humanism. This paper presents a new perspective by giving an overview of considerations in connection with the disability identity and introducing the Disability-Affirmative Therapy (D-AT). D-AT provides a strategy for formalizing cases and interventions that integrates knowledge about the disability identity. This approach provides insight into how rehabilitation psychology can be applied in counseling practice and how rehabilitation psychologists can differentiate themselves from specialists in different psychology fields.
